We went to upgrade a cooktop to a rangetop, a fairly common service we do, and we immediately noticed a strong gas smell. After some investigation, it was discovered that the original installer had used caulking instead of gas tape or pipe dope to seal the pipe threads. It worked while it was wet, but once it dried, it was no longer able to stop the gas from leaking out. We changed out the fittings with properly sealed new ones and eliminated the gas leak. Could have been a lot worse!
